How is sound produced in a tongue drum?

On the top surface of every tongue drum are vibrating metal tongues cut into steel, which are amplified by the resonating body. Because of their varying lengths, each of these tongues produces a different note; that is, each is tuned to a specific pitch. When the drum is played with the fingers or mallets, the metal tongues vibrate similarly to a tuning fork. The vibration is further amplified by the drum’s hollow body, and the air inside creates a full, resonant sound. Longer tongues produce lower notes, and shorter ones produce higher notes. The shape and thickness of the material also influence volume, sustain, and overtones.

Because the scales are fixed (e.g., C major or D major), the notes automatically complement each other, resulting in a calm, flowing tonal character.

What does “tuning” mean for a tongue drum?

Tuning refers to the specific scale to which a tongue drum is tuned. This is determined during the instrument’s manufacture and cannot be changed. Each notched tongue produces a specific note. Together, the notes form a harmonious scale, such as C major, D major, or A minor. Major tunings usually sound bright, open, and positive, while minor tunings sound calm, melancholic, and meditative. If a tongue drum is tuned to C major, for example, its notes consist exclusively of notes from that scale. This ensures there are no tonal disharmonies, and it’s impossible to play “wrong.”
