How to play Chimes & Bells

The bright, shimmering sound of a chime is produced by stroking the aluminium bars from one side to the other with the hand or a thin mallet. Rather than a full-bodied sound wave, a controlled, understated effect is created when individual bars are struck deliberately. Slow stroking produces a soft, gentle soundscape, whilst fast stroking creates an intense, brilliant effect. To allow their sound to unfold fully, chimes must be able to swing freely and are therefore suspended or mounted on a stand. Chimes are not played from sheet music, but are used as an effect instrument. They produce a broad, expansive sound without clearly distinct, melodically arranged pitches.

Bells are struck with a mallet. This produces a clear, focused single tone with a long sustain. A gentle strike produces a soft, subtle sound, whilst a forceful strike produces a loud, prominent sound. By touching the bell with the hand, the sound can be dampened or stopped. As individual bells are used as signalling and accent instruments that produce a defined single note, musical notes play virtually no role. Although each bell has a specific pitch – that is, a particular note – this is not played melodically in sequence according to musical notation, but is used solely as a signal, accent or sound impulse.
