Collection: Singing Bowls

Tibetan singing bowls for meditation and yoga

Bring your body and mind into a calmer, more balanced state and enjoy deep relaxation through the sound of singing bowls during yoga, meditation or breathing exercises. They help to reduce stress, promote mindfulness and aid concentration. A singing bowl is not a musical instrument in the traditional sense, but rather a tool for tranquillity, focus and conscious awareness.  At Sela Percussion, you’ll find both handcrafted brass Harmony Singing Bowls and exquisite crystal singing bowls in various designs. Our range also includes high-quality accessories such as mallets, strikers and protective carrying cases.

The tonal variety and playing techniques of a singing bowl

The interplay of material, shape and playing technique determines the sound of singing bowls. Each singing bowl has its own distinctive sound – ranging from warm and grounding to clear and ethereal. The long-lasting tones, with their delicate overtones, are produced by striking or rubbing the bowl. What makes them special is that these steady vibrations are not only heard but are often felt physically as well. The size and wall thickness of the bowl influence the pitch and resonance: smaller bowls sound brighter, larger ones deeper and fuller.
Singing bowls can be played in two ways:

  • Striking: The singing bowl is gently struck with a mallet. The tone unfolds immediately and fades slowly – ideal for brief accents or to mark the beginning and end of a meditation.
  • Rubbing (playing): The mallet is gently moved along the rim of the singing bowl. This produces the characteristic ‘singing’ sustained tone, the intensity of which can be controlled by pressure and speed.

The accessories used also have a significant impact on the sound. Soft mallets produce warm, rounded tones, whilst harder ones make the sound seem clearer and more focused.

The versatile uses of singing bowls

Whether in meditation, yoga or everyday life – singing bowls are used whenever the aim is to focus on relaxation, mindfulness and tranquillity. Their steady sound accompanies exercises and rituals in a calm and unobtrusive way.

Meditation & Mindfulness

Singing bowls are often used to support meditation. Their steady, sustained sound makes it easier to maintain focus and create moments of conscious calm.

Yoga & Breathing Exercises

In yoga, singing bowls accompany individual exercises, breathing techniques or the conclusion of a session. The sounds promote relaxation and help to connect body and mind.

Relaxation in Everyday Life

Singing bowls can also be used outside of set rituals – for example, for short breaks, to unwind after a long day, or as part of an evening routine.

Rituals & Sound Work

Singing bowls are ideal for marking transitions, introducing or concluding sessions, or for personal rituals. Sound and vibration provide conscious focal points in these contexts.

The Origins and Tradition of Singing Bowls

Singing bowls originate from the Himalayan region, particularly Tibet and Nepal. Tibetan singing bowls were traditionally used for rituals, meditation and mindful sound work. Passed down through generations, they embody craftsmanship, experience and a deep connection to sound and mindfulness. Today, singing bowls are found all over the world and are used in a variety of contexts – from meditation and yoga to modern relaxation practices.

Crystal Singing Bowls – modern singing bowls made from quartz crystal

Sela Singing Bowls, crafted from quartz crystal, are created using a special manufacturing process in which the glass is melted and shaped into the desired form in a centrifuge. This is what gives the material its exceptional acoustic properties. The matt glass bowls, with their elegant appearance, are available either with a rough, white surface or in various colours with a gentle colour gradient. Compared to brass singing bowls, the Crystal Singing Bowls resonate with a slightly clearer and more distinct tone and harmonise very well with gongs and tongue drums. Their soothing sound helps to reduce stress, promotes relaxation and brings body and mind into harmony. Supplied as a set with a wooden mallet and a silicone ring for stability, they are ready to use straight away.

Frequently asked questions

Tibetan singing bowls are characterised above all by their rich, multi-layered sound and their long tradition. They originate from the Himalayan region, particularly Nepal, where they are still crafted today using traditional techniques. Their characteristic warm, resonant sound is ideal for meditation, yoga and moments of mindful relaxation.
The choice of mallet has a significant influence on the sound of a singing bowl. Soft mallets usually produce a warm, rounded sound with gentle overtones, whilst harder mallets make the tone sound clearer, more direct and more assertive. The size and material of the mallet also determine how strongly the singing bowl vibrates and how long the tone lasts.
Brass harmony singing bowls produce a warm, grounding sound with many subtle overtones and an organic resonance. They have a soft, rounded and traditional quality. Quartz crystal singing bowls, on the other hand, sound clearer, brighter and very focused. Their tone is particularly pure, even and long-lasting.
Yes, Sela also offers singing bowls in attractive sets complete with accessories. In addition to individual models, Sela offers the Crystal Singing Bowl Chakra Set, with colours matching the seven chakras, as well as the Crystal Singing Bowl Set Frosted, comprising seven white singing bowls of various sizes.
