Kalimbas – compact musical instruments with a harmonious sound

Although musical instruments such as kalimbas are not typically classified as percussion instruments – unlike, for example, a cajón – they belong to the category of melodic percussion, just like the handpan or the tongue drum. These easy-to-play wooden instruments produce warm, gentle tones, can be played intuitively and are therefore also suitable for beginners. Depending on the model, they have between 8 and 17 tines (metal strips) or more, which affects the range – from simple melodies to more complex playing possibilities. Many kalimbas are tuned to fixed scales such as C major or pentatonic scales, so that the notes always harmonise well together.

Its metallic timbre has an almost surreal quality and is often characterised by a glissando effect, in which the note glides from high to low. Small mallets produce the characteristic vibrating sound, whilst the pitch can be altered by bending the metal sheet.

The distinctive clicking sound of the claves in this set of two varies depending on the type of wood: whilst beech and acacia produce a brighter, clearer sound, rosewood offers a slightly warmer and fuller tone. Striking the two wooden sticks together produces precise beats – ideal for timing, groove and rhythmic structures.
