Gongs for meditation, sound therapy & performance

At Sela Percussion, you’ll find a carefully curated selection of high-quality bronze gongs. These gongs impress with their warm, resonant sound, which is ideal for meditation, yoga, sound therapy or atmospheric performances. Alongside classic, rich-sounding Chau gongs, Sela offers wind gongs – also known as Feng gongs – which have a brighter, clearer tone, some featuring elegant lotus engravings. We also stock symphonic gongs with a clear and defined tone and good sustain. Our models are handcrafted masterpieces from China and Spain. They are available in various sizes, including matching gong stands and practical accessories to complete your setup.

The right gong for your needs

Sound, size, type and intended use are key factors when choosing a gong. Sela’s three types of gong each have their own distinct tonal character, ranging from deep and earthy to flat and bright, and balanced and clear.

Weight is also a crucial factor: the larger the gong, the richer and deeper its sound. There are small gongs (20–30 cm) for small spaces or travel, medium gongs (40–60 cm) for meditation and workshops, and large gongs (70–120 cm) for sound baths and performances.

A wind gong, with its bright, resonant tones, is ideal for meditative yoga and relaxation sessions. A Feng gong produces particularly light, open overtones. The symphonic gong is also suitable for relaxing sound journeys. The Chau gong produces deep, earthy tones and is ideal for the stage and sound baths.

Buy a gong in bronze or nickel silver

Depending on the model, Sela gongs are made either from a special bronze alloy or from nickel silver. Both materials are durable, robust and of high quality – the choice depends primarily on the desired tonal character.

Bronze produces a warmer, fuller sound with deep vibrations and rich overtones, making it ideal for meditative practices, sound baths and atmospheric sound work. As bronze reacts easily to humidity and touch, the gong should be wiped dry after playing and occasionally polished with a soft cloth to keep it dust-free.

Nickel silver, on the other hand, sounds brighter, clearer and more focused, with a direct response and defined resonance. This makes it particularly well-suited for musical performances and situations where a precise, brilliant gong sound is required. Nickel silver is more corrosion-resistant than bronze, but should also be wiped down regularly to remove skin oils. Nickel silver should be protected from moisture and polished with gentle agents as required.

An overview of Sela’s Gong series

Chau Gongs – powerful, deep and grounding

Chau gongs are made from a high-quality bronze alloy and, thanks to their generally heavier weight, produce a warm, full and powerful sound. They are ideal for immersive sound baths and energetic sessions in combination with singing bowls, if you are looking for a particularly earthy overall sound. The clean shape with a curved rim generates strong vibrations and often looks impressive, especially with a decorative lotus engraving.

Wind gongs – bright, open and resonant

Wind gongs are often referred to as feng gongs or simply ‘feng’ and are ideal for meditation and relaxation sessions, subtle soundscapes and sound healing, where an airy, resonant tone is desired. At Sela, you’ll find this design as a classic flat gong that responds quickly, produces many overtones and is lightweight. The open, floating sound of wind gongs harmonises particularly well with singing bowls and can easily be combined with a suitable gong stand.

Symphonic Gongs – clear, versatile and balanced

Symphonic Gongs combine depth and openness, making them the most versatile models, suitable for both meditation and live performance. Available in nickel silver, they deliver a balanced sound that is both musically nuanced and pleasantly rounded. With a medium weight, finely crafted surfaces and optional engraving, they are ideal for musical performances, studio use or in combination with singing bowls for professional sound work.

High-quality accessories for your gong

To complement our gongs, we offer accessories made from powder-coated steel that showcase your gong perfectly whilst providing a secure hold. Black tabletop gong stands, available in two sizes, can be placed on a table or on the floor and also serve as a decorative design feature. The stand allows the gong to swing freely, enabling it to produce its optimal sound.

The Gong Stand with a rectangular frame is the ideal choice for medium to large gongs. Thanks to its multi-reinforced steel construction, it holds the gong securely in place whilst still allowing it to swing freely. It can be assembled quickly, and locking brakes on the castors ensure stability.

The robust Gong Stand Pro is the sturdiest of our gong stands and is also suitable for very large gongs. The strong steel construction can support heavy weights and can be assembled and dismantled with ease.

Frequently asked questions

Gongs combine well with instruments that also produce soft vibrations and harmonious overtones. Singing bowls are very popular because they gently carry the sound of the gong and together create a wide-open sound space. Handpans, tongue drums, frame drums and flutes also go very well with them and add further colour to the soundscape. In meditative sessions, this creates a balanced setup that can be used in a variety of ways.
An engraving lends the gong a distinctive handcrafted touch and enhances its aesthetic appeal. On some models, Sela incorporates decorative engravings in a lotus design that blend harmoniously into the surface. The engraving does not affect the sound, but provides visual focal points – particularly when combined with singing bowls. Whether being played, hung up or displayed, the engraving is always an elegant eye-catcher that emphasises the character of the instrument.
The weight of a gong influences how deep, loud and intense its resonance is. A Feng gong has a brighter tone and responds quickly, whilst larger models such as Chau or Symphonic gongs produce broader, fuller sound waves. A Feng model is well suited to clear, open tones, whilst a larger gong develops more power and presence. Also consider additional sound sources, such as singing bowls, if you wish to combine different instruments to create a harmonious overall sound.
